ARAMARK, a global leader in professional services, today announced that Boston will the next stop on the ARAMARK Building Community national tour, an initiative that will enhance community centers and create long-term commitments with community centers in 30 cities over the next year. ARAMARK has teamed up with the Elizabeth Peabody House, located at 277 Broadway in Somerville, a non-profit organization that provides a broad array of educational, social and recreational services addressing essential and changing needs of families in the City of Somerville and the surrounding Boston community.
On Thursday, Sept. 18, ARAMARK employee volunteers from Boston and the greater New England area will participate in a day of service, refurbishing the Elizabeth Peabody House. With this event, ARAMARK looks forward to beginning a long-term commitment to this community center and the seven other local neighborhood centers which are part of the Massachusetts Association of Settlement Houses (MASH). In the future, ARAMARK volunteers will come back to the centers, offering expertise and resources related to health and wellness, workforce readiness and basic services, such as food and clothing drives and nutritional education, as well as job skills and interview training to enhance and strengthen programs.
"At ARAMARK, we have a legacy of putting community needs first. Our corporate resources, combined with our passion for volunteerism, allow us to positively impact social issues in a powerful way, and in a manner that is truly relevant to our business strengths, culture and the community," said Mark Barrocas, President of ARAMARK Wearguard based in Norwell, MA and local executive sponsor for ARAMARK Building Community. "We look forward to developing an ongoing relationship with the Elizabeth Peabody House and many other community centers in the region, which will allow us to leverage our energy and expertise throughout the Boston area in a meaningful way."
During the day-long event, ARAMARK employee volunteers, in partnership with City Year, a group headquartered in Boston and dedicated to engaging young people in full-time community service and ARAMARK's volunteerism partner, will participate in a variety of hands-on enhancement projects around the Elizabeth Peabody House including: revitalizing the center's outdoor spaces by landscaping, painting and building benches, refurbishing the community theater and classrooms by painting walls and inspirational murals, building bookcases and shelves among other restorative projects.
"The Elizabeth Peabody House, as an anchor community institution, has been relied upon by thousands of families over the years," said Selvin Chambers, Executive Director of the Elizabeth Peabody House. "This partnership with ARAMARK is a welcomed and natural progression for both parties, and will help make a lasting impact by allowing us to use the revitalized space to impact more children and families for years to come."
Through ARAMARK Building Community, volunteers use their expertise to help youth and adults develop critical, employable work skills and connect them to career opportunities; support families with nutrition and wellness education; provide basic needs such as food and clothing; and help identified partners run cleaner, safer and more efficient facilities on an ongoing basis.
