FSU Dining, students and staff go dark on Earth Hour to shed light on sustainability

On March 28, ARAMARK at Florida State University joined the tens of millions around the world who participated in Earth Hour. Sponsored by World Wildlife Fund, this event encourages people from across the globe to promote sustainability worldwide by turning off their lights between 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM.

Seminole Dining and the Green Living class wanted to do their part, so they worked together to sponsor "Dine in the Dark", their very own Earth Hour event on Florida State's campus. And to go the extra mile, they decided to add an extra hour of support by keeping the lights off from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Despite a steady downpour, "Dine in the Dark" was a rousing success. Over 150 students and staff braved the rain to head to The Park Avenue Diner, where they enjoyed a buffet of food provided by local vendors, complete with vegan and vegetarian options.

Johnson Controls helped set the ambiance by donating low voltage, battery-powered LED light bulbs to replicate the light given off by tea candles. This allowed patrons to dine by "candle light." The Diner's staff even got in on the fun by accessorizing with glow stick necklaces and bracelets.
