Pirates Keep it Fresh at the 1st Annual ECU Farmer's Market

On September 17th, 2009, ECU teamed up with ARAMARK to host the 1st Annual ECU Farmer's Market, with a locally-grown feast that followed in Todd Dining Hall. The Farmer's Market took place at the bottom of College Hill Drive, and was open to all ECU students, faculty, and staff, as well as those outside the campus community.

Local farmers sampled and sold their local fare of fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, baked goods, and more. There were also give-aways and music provided by ECU Radio WZMB. In addition to great fun, this was also an ECU Wellness Passport Event.

Buying locally is beneficial to the farmer, the consumer, and the community. Environmentally, a farmer's market preserves farmland and rewards family farmers who produce high quality goods. Nutritionally, it brings healthy, farm-fresh produce to consumers who may have forgotten that non-processed foods are bursting with flavor and nutritional value. Aesthetically, it is a feast for the senses. Socially, it brings together community members of all ages and backgrounds.

ECU Campus Dining and ARAMARK Nutrition Director, Janie Eubanks, says, "I want people to know what fresh really tastes like. Unlike many foods we eat today that come in a box or have traveled 1300 to 1500 miles before reaching the grocery store isles, local farmers can provide us with foods that are hormone and antibiotic free, organic, fresh and nutritious." Eubanks has been passionate about bringing a Farmer's Market to ECU since last year. She had worked tirelessly with ECU Campus Recreation and Wellness and Student Health Services to bring the event to fruition.
